In West Africa, 27 million people are acutely food insecure. This figure could rise to 38 million if nothing is done by next June.

Last year, four billion dollars were missing to satisfy UN programs. The sahel countries as well as regional and international organizations held a consultation on 6 April in Paris with a view to mobilizing funds, with a slogan: "The Ukrainian crisis must not make us forget the crisis in the Sahel". According to Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States, "West Africa is expected to record a fertilizer consumption deficit of between 1.5 and 2 million tons for 2022. This volume corresponds to a forecast deficit estimated for food crops between fifteen and twenty million tonnes of cereal equivalent".

For the past decade, far from subsiding, food crises have been increasing across the West African region, particularly in Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Mali and Nigeria. Between 2015 and 2022, the number of people in need of emergency food assistance almost quadrupled from 7 million to 27 million.
