If with the coronavirus pandemic, the sector had experienced a slowdown, the indicators are green again for the 2021/2022 campaign. In West Africa, the ginning segment will resume in 2021/2022. During the said season, cotton fibre production is expected to rise to 1.46 million tonnes, an increase of 38% compared to the volume of the previous season (1 million tonnes) and a new record. This dynamic can be explained in particular by more remunerative prices from one year to the next, which encourage seed cotton producers to increase their investments, particularly in Mali and Burkina Faso.
In both Côte d'Ivoire and Benin, the harvests expected to increase during this season should also improve ginning activities. According to the intergovernmental group, the export segment will also record a record volume with 1.44 million tonnes of fibre destined for the international market in 2021/2022. Overall fibre production is expected to increase by 5.5% to 25.5 million tonnes.
