The West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) contributed $43 million to Ecobank Group's consolidated net profit. The zone presents itself as the best performing region for the institution in the first quarter of 2021.

A redistribution of the cards is taking place in the different regions of ecobank's activities. With a contribution of $43 million, WAEMU is proving to be the most profitable region of the pan-African banking holding company based in Lomé, Togo. The Union posted its capacity in the first quarter of 2021, and Nigeria continues to decline in importance on the group's results.

WAEMU's performance was supported by banking operating income of $133.45 million, up 13% compared to the same period in 2020. No other region has had this level of income or this increase. Net provisions for credit risks increased by $5 million to $14 million. But in reality, the share of subprime loans on the overall volume of loans fell to 3.5% against 3.9% in March 2020.

The second best-performing region is the English-speaking countries of West Africa (AWA), excluding Nigeria, which generated a net profit of $41 million. All of the WAEMU subsidiaries of the Ecobank group were also marked by an overall return on equity of 21.4%.
