During 2023, economic activity showed real growth in Senegal. An increase in the trade deficit has been recorded in terms of foreign trade. It posted $356.2 million in May compared to $290.6 million in April 2023

.

The monthly business note from the Director of Economic Forecasts and Studies (DPEE) indicated that Senegal's trade deficit increased by 22.5% between April and May 2023. Indeed, the note mentions that the trade deficit rose to 208.1 billion FCFA ($356.2 million) in May against 169.8 billion FCFA ($290.6 million) in April. This trend is explained by a greater increase in imports of goods (+102.9 billion FCFA), compared to that of exports (+52.3 billion FCFA) according to

the estimate of the DPEE.

According to the information in the note, Côte d'Ivoire remains Senegal's top supplier in the UEMOA space, with an estimated share of 86.8%. “Imports from this country are, mainly, plastic and artificial materials (38.9%), edible fruits and vegetables (8.8%) and products of the para-chemical industries (8.1%),” the source said.
