The World Bank is providing $180 million to Liberia through the country's Access to Electricity and Power Sector Strengthening project. With the support of the financial institution, the Liberian authorities hope to slow the growth of poverty in the country.

This financial support from the Bank follows an initial phase of commitment of $44 million by IDA in the form of credit and $15 million in the form of a grant. Grants of $2.5 million and $2.7 million were also allocated by the Power Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) and the Japan Policy and Human Resources Development Fund, respectively, which are two entities administered by the World Bank.
"With the devastating impact of Covid-19 on the economy and people's daily lives, improving access to energy will stimulate more inclusive economic growth while support for the informal sector will enable the most vulnerable people to cope with the income losses they have suffered," said Khwima Nthara, World Bank Director for Liberia.
The initiative aims to bring energy to 632,500 Liberians. The second part of the project will create favourable conditions and frameworks for the development of renewable energy mini-grids and the deployment of domestic energy installations in remote areas.
