On Thursday, October 27, 2022, Safaricom, Kenya's telecommunications service provider, launched the country's first fifth-generation (5G) network. This network is the pioneer in the commercial deployment of this revolutionary technology in East Africa.

Use of the new Safaricom network started on 27 October. Several customers connected to this network from Kenya, namely Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii, Kakamega and Nakuru with 5G-compatible devices, started using the network on 27 October, spread over 35 sites. To the company's CEO, Peter Ndegwa said that the company expected 200 sites by next year.

According to Ndegwa “Customers in 5G-ready zones can now enjoy fast, reliable Internet connectivity for their homes and businesses.” According to him, “Plans are underway to provide 5G data plans for mobile Internet, which will be ready by December, but the home ones will be ready immediately. “On the other hand, domestic and business customers confirm the availability of the network in their region.
