The public operator Ethio telecom has launched its new three-year roadmap, the “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028 Strategy”, alongside its annual business plan for the Ethiopian fiscal year 2018 (EFY), setting ambitious growth and investment goals to strengthen its position as a regional digital power.

The strategy that succeeds the LEAD growth strategy (2022—2025) recently concluded by the company, which Ethio Telecom is described as a transformation phase that expanded its subscriber base and consolidated its role in the country's digital economy.

Key elements of the plan include:

Subscriber growth: From 83 million today to 100 million users by 2028.

Network coverage: Increased 4G LTE coverage to 85%, extended service to 550 additional cities, and 5G deployment in 10 additional cities, bringing the total of 5G sites to 490.

Mobile Money: its Telebirr platform is rapidly expanding and now has 75 million users, with annual transactions expected to reach ETB 21.3 trillion and a turnover of ETB 49.1 billion by 2028.

Digital infrastructure: investing in data centers, cloud capacity, advanced AI-based platforms, and cybersecurity to support Ethiopia's digital economy and regional services.

Financial goals: to reach a turnover of 842.3 billion ETB over three years (+154% compared to the previous strategic period), with projected foreign currency earnings of 976 million dollars. The company's assets are expected to reach ETB 851 billion by 2028

The plan also includes inclusive access, gender mainstreaming, community engagement, and sustainability initiatives, including electric vehicle charging services and support for smart cities.
