As part of strengthened cooperation with Mauritania, the EU decides to grant 210 million euros for migration management. The announcement was made on Thursday 8 February 2024 by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen

The President of the European Commission indicated that in the field of security, the EU plans to increase its support to 40 million euros this year, in particular to equip a new battalion to secure the border with Mali and fight against terrorism. According to von der Leyen, “insecurity and the lack of economic opportunities in the region are driving many people to migrate. This migration often brings them first to Mauritania (...) As such, you are honored to welcome some 150,000 Malian refugees fleeing violence in their country

The EU is working to establish strategic partnerships with migrants' countries of origin and transit in order to combat irregular immigration to Europe.
