On 27 March 2023, Choguel Kokalla Maïga, Prime Minister of the country, announced during the 19th session of the National Council for Food Security (CNSA) that the Malian State will provide significant food aid in 2023 to the millions of inhabitants of the country who need it. power supply. Indeed, the head of government announced that the State of Mali intends to “provide 30,010 tons of food assistance to 1,246,406 vulnerable people; make emergency one-off distributions of 2,000 tons of cereals; carry out intervention sales of 15,000 tons of cereals; strengthen livelihoods and resilience capacity by setting up pilot shops in certain areas. municipalities of the district of Bamako”.

In reality, this food crisis is caused by the sanctions imposed on Mali by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Monetary Union (UEMOA). However, according to media reports, the UEMOA court of justice ordered the suspension of sanctions taken in January by West Africa against Mali on 24 March.
