For the period from 2014 to 2019, West Africa generated $10.2 billion in value under
private equity activities. It has risen to first place in the region ahead of North Africa,
Southern Africa, East Africa and Central Africa. In total, the African continent has over the period been the
location of 1,046 private equity transactions, for a total value of $25.3 billion,
we learn from the report of the African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (AVCA).
While no one could imagine the arrival of covid-19 and its economic consequences, Africa
was at the heart of private equity strategies. The funds mobilized in this context for the region reached
$3.9 billion in 2019, a record level since 2016. The fund of the private equity firm Actis, dedicated to
long-term financing in the infrastructure sector, contributed nearly half of this
mobilization with a closing at $1.2 billion.
West Africa's performance was driven by Nigeria, which concentrated 68% of the value of
transactions and 55% of the number of private equity transactions. The country had something to attract. He stayed on
an average growth of 2.3% of its gross domestic product (GDP) and its various bodies in charge
of the business world have taken many favorable decisions for investments. Others
performers in this sub-region are Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire.
