The U.S. State Department's annual report on drug trafficking ranked Morocco as one of the world's leading cannabis-producing countries. Europe is a primary market fed from the mountainous Rif region.

After it was placed under surveillance on February 25 by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) for its shortcomings in the fight against money laundering and the financing of drug trafficking and terrorism, Morocco has just been pinned by the US Department of State.

Moroccan hashish is smuggled south into Mauritania and then transferred through Mali and Niger to Libya for transshipment and distribution. It is also increasingly smuggled into South America and the Caribbean, where traffickers trade hashish for cocaine and transport it to Europe for distribution.
