The Nigerien government has set up an agricultural development program called “Nigeriens Feeding Nigeriens (3N)”. Thanks to this program, the country has risen to the rank of leading producer of millet and sorghum in WAEMU.

Niger is the leading producer of millet and sorghum in WAEMU in 2020, with nearly 40% of production in the community area, indicates a recent BCEAO report. The initiative of the former President of the Republic Issoufou Mahamadou aimed to compensate for the chronic deficit in cereal production. Over the period from 2018 to 2020, the Mena country produced a total of 16.5 million t of millet and sorghum, specify statistics from the institution based in Dakar, compiled by Niamey. Indeed, production, which had come out at nearly 6 million t in 2018, fell to 5.1 million t a year later, before starting a new upward trend, recorded in 2020, by a production estimated at 5.4 million t (5.8% between 2019 and 2020).
