Ministers in charge of Agriculture and Trade of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) held a meeting on December 13 and 14 in Cotonou, Benin. On occasion, they have tried to provide answers to the soaring prices of fertilizers as well as their availability.

The majority of countries in the world are faced with rising fertilizer prices. This situation is more acute in sub-Saharan Africa, where the rate of dependence on imports of both phosphorus and nitrogen is around 70% and in a context where hunger has worsened in Africa since 2019. The Ministers in charge of Agriculture and Trade of the Union have taken necessary and urgent decisions not to compromise the next agricultural campaign 2022/23 but which remain at this stage at the level of recommendations.
