Corruption cases are tarnishing the image of Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio accused in recent weeks of having made illegal expenses amounting to more than three million euros.

Fatima Bio, wife of Julius Maada Bio, had spent the equivalent of 2.5 million euros on a campaign to combat sexual violence and rape while Sierra Leonean law prohibits the president's wife from using public funds.
The information was published in January by the US-based African news site, Africanist Press. The same source publishes that the "superminister" David John Francis, one of the most powerful figures in the country, had committed for a million dollars (830,000 euros) of ill-justified or unjustified expenses.
The political analyst and head of the NGO Campaign for Good Governance, says Fatima Bio used public money to pay for plane tickets, hotel rooms and office furniture.
The two defendants, namely the president's wife and Minister David John Francis, denied any fraudulent action.
