Asim Ghafoor was arrested in July and sentenced to three years in prison and fined around 790,000 euros. On Wednesday evening, the official Emirati agency WAM announced that a court in Abu Dhabi “convicted Asim Ghafoor (...) for money laundering linked to a tax evasion operation in the United States.” This court “revoked the previous prison sentence and sentenced him to a fine of five million dirhams”, equivalent to around 1.3 million euros. As a reminder, Asim Ghafoor was the lawyer of Jamal Khashoggi, brutally murdered in 2018 by Saudi agents.
