In 2024, Kenya exported $737 million worth of goods to the United States, representing about 10% of its exports totals. Nairobi seeks to secure and maintain this strategic access to American market, in a context of reconfiguration of trade agreements internationals.
Talks were initiated last August to relaunch a process initiated in 2020 under the first term of President Donald Trump. They then evolved under the administration of Joe Biden, in the framework for a commercial and investment partnership aimed at lifting non-tariff barriers and to deepen bilateral trade.
However, these discussions did not succeed until the Donald Trump returned to the White House last year, leaving pending several technical and regulatory aspects.
The resumption of negotiations therefore comes at a a key moment for the Kenyan economy, which is seeking to diversify its markets and to consolidate its positions on the American market, while attracting more of foreign direct investment.
