In India, coffee cultivation has become a deficit proposition. It is hampered by the high cost of inputs and production followed by the shortage of labor. Now, the industry is also affected by climate change according to Mini Tejaswi.

The production and quality of Indian coffee has been hit by drastic changes in climate patterns over the past few years. Indeed, there have been more natural disasters that have posed obstacles to coffee production in India. Examples include dry spells between 2015 and 2017, periods of heavy rains, floods, and non-seasonal landslides between 2018 and 2022. Production for the 2022 crop year was estimated at 3,93,400 metric tons according to post-flowering estimates by the Coffee Board of India. Bose Ramanathan, former member of the Coffee Council believes that “Coffee farmers are facing a serious financial crisis due to the vagaries of nature. For him, “The coffee, which is supposed to be harvested in December, is heavily damaged.”

To believe, “Because of the increase in input costs from year to year and the increase in labour and benefits costs, which accounting for 60% to 70% of total plantation expenses, coffee farmers are left with very little money in hand. It's not enough to repay loans.”
