In a statement, the Ghanaian government said the country began talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday, September 26, for a loan program supported by the fund. This is in an effort to alleviate the economic hardship that has triggered the street protests.

Last July, the West African country requested a loan from the IMF. This prompted a discussion between the IMF team, officials from the Ministry of Finance and Ghana's central bank about reforms.

As a result, the Ghanaian government, being a major producer of gold and cocoa, has been working to control runaway inflation, reduce public debt and strengthen the local currency. By the end of June, the balance of payments deficit had increased to nearly $2.5 billion from about $935 million in March.
