The Cacao Coffee Council held a working session with the World Bank on Thursday, September 8 in Abidjan. The objective is to identify the number of cocoa producers and the production areas of these farmers.

Côte d'Ivoire provides 40% of the world's cocoa supply, but only receives 5-7% of the global earnings generated by this sector, which come from mainly processing and distribution, according to the World Bank's 9th report on the economic situation of Côte d'Ivoire, published on 11 July 2019. Thus, the session, which also focused on income security for producers and the operationalization of the traceability system for cocoa and coffee, brought together the Council's traceability committee, coordinated by Dadié Arsène, Deputy Director in charge of regional delegations and Séka Séka Sylvestre, head of the IT projects and development department.

The traceability challenge, which aims to assess subsidies and the sustainability of the sector, could also raise the level of this sector, which employs nearly one million of producers and provides an income for 1/5 of the Ivorian population. Especially since 54.9% of Ivorian cocoa farmers and their families now live below the poverty line, according to this World Bank document.
