As part of a radical initiative, the federal government has released 21 new regulations for Nigeria's upstream oil and gas sector.

The ^48th edition of the annual international conference and exhibition of the Society of Petroleum Engineers of Nigeria took place in Lagos. On the occasion, the director general of the Nigerian Upstream Oil Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, announced that the federal government has published 21 new regulations for Nigeria's upstream oil and gas sector. These regulations were launched as part of a radical initiative to unlock investments, streamline operations, and align industry practices with national and global priorities. For the latter, the new regulatory frameworks developed under the 2021 Petroleum Industry Act are designed to provide clarity, attract capital, and promote accountability in exploration and production operations. Among the regulations put forward by the NUPRC boss are regulations on the measurement of upstream oil, which promote transparency and accountability through technological deployment for accurate monitoring of production, and regulations on flaring, evacuation, and methane gas emissions aimed at reducing emissions and enforcing decarbonization

Other key regulations include host community development regulations, domestic gas delivery requirement regulations, upstream oil safety regulations, and decommissioning and abandonment regulations.
