In a recent report, the African Development Bank (AfDB) announces that the value of Cameroon's natural capital amounts to 222.3 billion dollars, or about 130 000 billion CFA francs. According to the institution, this represents 39% of the country's national wealth.

Cameroon's natural capital grew from 212 billion to 222 billion dollars, an increase of 4.5%, according to the ADB. According to the African institution, Cameroon's natural capital consists of renewable natural capital formed by forests rich in biodiversity, which play a central role in climate regulation and carbon sequestration, a hydroelectric potential estimated at 12,000 megawatts not yet fully exploited, and a significant solar potential, with an average insolation of 5.8 kWh/m²/day favorable to clean energy production. Non-renewable natural capital, on the other hand, consists of oil, natural gas, and mineral resources.

The institution believes that despite this “significant potential, which constitutes a strategic lever for economic transformation and the achievement of Cameroon's sustainable development goals”, “the contribution of natural capital to the Cameroonian economy remains moderate, because its potential is underexploited.”

The ADB wants as proof of this a decline in the participation of natural capital in the gross domestic product. “Rents from natural capital increased from 6.5% of GDP in 2018 to 4.7% in 2020, reflecting a decrease in the effective economic valuation of these

resources.”
