As part of its fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, Algeria is multiplying measures to control and dry up the black currency market.

Algeria has taken numerous measures since being added to the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) gray list in October 2024. The country plans to comply with the recommendations of this organization for monitoring money laundering and terrorist financing. In this fight, the black currency market is central because of the risks of recycling capital of dubious origin. “We are aware that the black currency market is polluting our economy, and it has become a liability,” said Deputy Mohamed Hani, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Assembly (APN) in an interview

with TSA.

Parmi les mesures prises pour assécher ce marché figure le plafonnement since last November to 7,500 euros per year the amount that residents and même durant non-residents can export each trip for a fee previously. To this measure, there has been a ban since 2025 on cash in real estate transactions, the purchase of vehicles and yachts as well as the payment of compulsory insurance.

Measures taken by the Ministry of Commerce to regulate imports have also been added, which makes it possible to control the money supply that circulates on the black currency market.

The deputy also mentioned the opening in “a few months” of branches of the External Bank of Algeria (BEA) in France to “capture” the currencies of the Algerian diaspora in this country.
