On Monday, March 20, the Economic Community of West African States expressed concern about the low contribution of value-added tax to the tax revenue rate in Nigeria.

The concern of the ECOWAS Customs Union and Taxation Director, Salifou Tiemtore was expressed at a workshop on the production of VAT tax expenditures for Nigeria, which was organized by the ECOWAS Commission in framework for the implementation of the Fiscal Transition Support Programme in West Africa in Abuja. The vision of this program is to improve tax management in ECOWAS regions and The West African Economic and Monetary Union.

noted that the 25% VAT contribution to collection was relative, especially compared to the 2021 tax collections, which had a VAT contribution of 47.1%. For Salifou Tiemtore, it was recommended that member States, at the Abidjan regional seminar on “managing tax incentives in West Africa and defining the reference tax regime for VAT”, send tax expenditure evaluation reports to the Commissions

de la CEDEAO and UEMOA before the end of March of the year following the evaluation year.
