The largest mine in Africa that is usually located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) should soon be located in Ghana, following the Gold Fields joint venture and AngloGold Ashanti in the west of the country. Average annual production is estimated at 900,000 ounces of gold.

South Africa's Gold Fields and AngloGold Ashanti operated in the nearby Tarkwa and Iduapriem mines in western Ghana, respectively. They decided to merge the mines through a joint venture owned 66.7% by the first company and 33.3% by the second. It is an announcement by the two firms in a joint press release. For them, with an average annual production estimated at 900,000 tons, “the proposed joint venture would create the largest gold mine in Africa and one of the largest in the world.” They probably refer to the Kibali mine in the DRC — often considered the largest in Africa and which produced 750,000 ounces of gold in 2022.

According to Martin Preece, acting CEO of Gold Fields, the proposed joint venture is an exciting opportunity to combine mining operations that are essentially part of the same mineral deposit and that's something including Gold Fields and AngloGold Ashanti have discussed several times over the years. [...] It will also significantly improve the overall quality of our portfolio.”
