A new report from the African Development Bank (AfDB) entitled “2022 Africa Industrialization Index” was published on Thursday, November 24, 2022. In this report, it should be noted that Benin is experiencing a marked increase in the ranking of the most industrialized African countries.

The report states that Benin is ranked 18th out of 52 African countries evaluated, a considerable 10 places. Indeed, Benin occupied 28th place in this ranking in 2020, ahead of countries such as Togo (26th), Cameroon, Angola (34th) and Burkina Faso (36th). The country was 32nd in 2010 and had its worst ranking in 2012 and 2016 (33rd).

Benin certainly owes this performance to the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone, which, in less than a year and a half, is undergoing a remarkable economic transformation in Benin.

Also, according to the report, during the period covered (2021), Guinea, Rwanda, Tanzania, Ghana, Djibouti, Benin, Mozambique, Senegal, Ethiopia, and Uganda all moved up five places or more in the ranking, according to the report. The best performing countries are not necessarily those with the largest economies. Thus, the most successful countries are “those that generate the highest manufacturing added value per capita, with a significant proportion of manufactured products destined for export.”
